The MUTAZ AND RADA SAWWAF ARABIC COMICS INITIATIVE, established in 2014, is an academic body at the American University of Beirut that aims to elevate and facilitate the interdisciplinary research of Arabic comics. It promotes the production, scholarship and teaching of comics, and provides a historic repository for the rich heritage of Arabic comics through collecting, archiving and digitizing comics from the region.
In addition, the MAHMOUD KAHIL AWARD for comics hosts an annual conference on comics in the Arab world, in order to gather comic artists and promote the study and analysis of comics from the region. This has encouraged the publication of artistic and scholarly works on comics.
