The faces and colors created by Rayies emanate a great sense of humor. He was born in Saudi Arabia and studied psychology at the King Abdel Aziz University. At the young age of 15 he started his adventure with cartoon and journalism.
As of 2000 he worked as a cartoonist and political portraits’ artist for the publications of the Saudi Research & Publishing Company, including Bassem children magazine and Al Jadida magazine. Following his return from a period of studies in New York he worked with Okaz and Asharq al-Awsat newspapers from 2014 until 2015, and has since been working with the Arab News newspaper.
He was a member of the Professional Cartoonists Association in the USA, a member of the Society of Illustrators also in USA, and a jury member for the Dubai Journalism Award. He also participated in many exhibitions such as International Cartoons Exhibition in Romania, European Cartoons Exhibition in Portugal, and the Cartoon Exhibition in USA, Pennsylvania on the G20 summit.
In 2011, Rayies won the 1st prize for cartoon art at the scientific conference for KSA universities, and the 1st prize for the best Hajj cartoon. He also contributed to books such as the Best Editorial Cartoon Book 2005.
Rayies is very influenced by the late Mahmoud Kahil, and by Ali Farzat. He considers promptitude a main characteristic of a creative artist in order for him to produce cartoons out of everyday events, and he stresses on the importance of being well-cultured and well-read.
The editor-in-chief of Arab News, Faysal Abbas, commented on working with Rayies noting that his cartoons are so powerful because they go beyond boundaries and that the readers surely appreciate his art.
في وجوهه وألوانه ، خفة روح تتجاوز الحدود. بدأ مشواره الفني في عالم الكاريكاتور مبكراً، فمنذ الخامسة عشر اتّجه محمّد الريّس نحو الصّحافة والرسم. ولد في السّعودية، ودرس في قسم علم النفس في جامعة الملك عبد العزيز.
عمل منذ عام 2000 في مطبوعات الشركة السعودية للأبحاث والنشر كرسام كاريكاتور وبورتريه سياسي، ومنها مجلة «باسم» للأطفال و مجلة «الجديدة»، وبعد عودته من نيويورك للدراسة ، عمل الريس في جريدة «عكاظ» وجريدة «الشرق الأوسط» من 2014 حتى 2015، ثم في صحيفة «عرب نيوز» من 2015 حتى الآن.
اعتبر عضواً في اتحاد محترفي الكارتون العالميين في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وعضواً من أعضاء نقابة الرّسامين في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وعضوا في لجنة تحكيم جائزة دبي للصحافة، بالاضافة الى مشاركاته في المعارض العديدة منها؛ معرض الكاريكاتور الدولي في رومانيا ومعرض الكاريكاتور الأوروبي في البرتغال، ومعرض قمة العشرين للكاريكاتور في ولاية بنسلفانيا الأميركية.
في عام 2011 فاز الريّس بجائزة المركز الأول في الكاريكاتور في المؤتمر العلمي لجامعات المملكة والمركز الأول لأفضل كاريكاتور للحج. وكما شارك في كتب علمية منها كتاب «أفضل كاريكاتور سياسي» طبعة 2005.
تأثر الريس بالراحل محمود كحيل، وبعلي فرزات، وهو يرى أن السرعة البديهة هي أهم عامل يجعل الفنان مبدعاً، كي يحوّل الأحداث اليومية الى عمل كاريكاتوري بالاضافة الى القراءة والثقافة.
وتعليقاً على استضافة الريّس في «عرب نيوز»، قال رئيس تحريرها فيصل عبّاس أنّ كاريكاتور محمّد يختزن القوة لأنه يتخطى الحدود، وأن قراء الجريدة سيقدرون ذلك.
